Lois E. Westman, 78, of Solon Springs and formerly of Superior, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center, Hawthorne.

She was born March 26, 1936, in Cloquet, Minn., daughter of Clarence and Sadie (Widstrom) Benson.

On June 13, 1959, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Superior, Lois E. Benson and Frank A. Westman were united in marriage.

Lois was an elementary school teacher in Rice Lake, Wis., White Bear Lake, Minn., and for over 30 years at Bryant Elementary School in South Superior.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, traveling, and was a meticulous homemaker, all while working full time as a teacher. She was also an avid bird watcher (especially hummingbirds) and pet lover.

Lois was a lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Superior.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband of over 55 years, Frank; daughter, Cheryl Westman, Solon Springs; brother, Clifford (Sofia) Benson, Miami, Fla.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Saturday, July 26, at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior. James McCusker, lay minister, will officiate.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, followed by a luncheon at Bethel Lutheran Church.

The family wants to thank Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center and Essentia Health St. Mary's Hospice for taking great care of Lois during her final years. A special thank you to the angels on 3rd floor at Middle River, simply the best!
