UMD on the radio
Red Rock Radio and the UMD have signed a two-year extension to their radio rights contract. The extension takes Red Rock's exclusive rights for Bulldog football and men's hockey through the 2014-15 season.
UMD football will continue to air on KQDS-AM (The Fan 1490) while men's hockey is on KZIO-FM (94X).
"Keeping the UMD football and hockey teams here is a big win for our stations," said Red Rock Radio Sports Director Bruce Ciskie, who is the voice of UMD men's hockey. "It's great to know that we'll continue to broadcast Bulldog games to all our listeners throughout northeast Minnesota."
Red Rock Radio has held the broadcast rights for UMD football and men's hockey since the 2009-10 season.
Spring practice begins
Approximately 77 participants will convene at James S. Malosky Stadium Monday for the opening of the University of Minnesota Duluth's spring football drills.
First-year head coach Curt Wiese, who spent the past five seasons as the Bulldogs' offensive coordinator, welcomes back 53 lettermen (including seven starters on offense and nine on defense) from last fall, when UMD posted a 10-2 overall record, captured its fifth consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division title and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the fifth time in as many years.
The Bulldogs will practice on 15 occasions over three weeks, culminating with the 39th annual Maroon-White Spring Game at 5:30 p.m. on April 26.
Local players listed on UMD's roster include former Superior Spartans' Chris Blake, defensive back, and Joe Reichert, wide receiver; and former Northwestern Tigers' Ryan Miesbauer, tight end. Blake and Reichert will be seniors and Miesbauer will be a junior.
BULLDOG BITS: UMD will also scrimmage at 9 a.m. on April 13 and hold the UMD Coaches Clinc at 9 a.m. on April 20.
