The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team led by as many as 17 points in the second half, but needed late-game heroics by Sally Linzmeier to defeat UW-Stout 86-81 in a WIAC tournament game Tuesday night before a crowd of 412 at Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie.

With the score tied 79-79 with 23 seconds remaining, Linzmeier’s three-point play gave the Yellowjackets an 82-79 lead.

The Blue Devils to cut the deficit to 82-81 five seconds later on a jumper by Kyleigh Hebert, but UWS sealed the victory with two free throws apiece from Britnee Blake and Grace Kennedy.

Linzmeier finished with a game-high 32 points, including 20 in the first half that ended with Superior leading 48-34. The junior also led UWS with seven rebounds.

Also for the Yellowjackets, Blake scored 17 points and dished out five assists, and Brynn Liljander added 16 points.

Stout, which rallied to take the lead with around four minutes remaining, was led by Hebert’s 22 points. Katelynne Folkers added 15 points and Tara Matter had 11.

Superior now plays at No. 1 UW-Whitewater in one WIAC sectional game at 7 p.m. Thursday. UW-Stevens Point and UW-Oshkosh will play in the other semifinal game. The championship game is on Saturday.
