Library offers value resource
National Library Week is celebrated April 13-19 this year. The week is set aside to recognize the huge benefit libraries provide communities. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Lives change @ your library.”
Libraries can indeed change lives. From big changes, such as: finding your dream job, improving relationships or overcoming a significant hardship, to small changes like picking up a new hobby, reading more to your children or finding healthier recipes, you can find resources to help at the library for free.
The American Library Association website has an online calculator that will calculate the monetary value of using your library. You input the number resources you’ve borrowed along with services you’ve used and the calculator estimates the value of those services. Out of curiosity, I entered my library usage numbers for the past month and the calculator estimated I’ve gotten over $1000 in value from using the library. Being able to utilize $12,000 of resources free over the course of a year is incredibly valuable for my family. The monetary savings itself is incredible, but even more valuable to us is the hours of learning and entertainment that can’t be calculated monetarily.
Happy National Library Week to the librarians and staff of the Superior Public Library; the work you do and access you provide is life changing and incredibly valuable to our community.
