The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team came up a bit short in search for its first WIAC Tournament championship with a 75-69 loss to UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh.

The WIAC title was the second for the Titans, who also won it all in 1999. With the title, UWO earns the WIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, its first appearance since 2000.

For the Titans (24-3), Katelyn Kuehl had 18 points and 11 rebounds; Marissa Selner added 14 points and five rebounds; Sarah Stecker chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds; and Morgan Kokta had 10 points and three rebounds. Oshkosh had assists on 20 of its 24 baskets.

Brynn Liljander led UWS with 21 points and three rebounds. Sally Linzmeier added 20 points and four rebounds.

The score was tied nine times in the first half, which ended with Superior leading 39-38.

The game remained close until .UWO scored 11 straight points to take 67-58 lead with 5:28 left.

UWS got within 70-66 on a Britnee Blake 3-pointer with 2:21 left, but Oshkosh sealed the victory with five free throws down the stretch.

UWS ends the season with a record of 16-12.

Semifinal game

UWS advanced to its first ever WIAC championship game with an 84-63 win over UW-Whitewater Thursday night at Kachel Gym in Whitewater.

UWS had five players score in double figures, led by Linzmeier’s 21 points. Hadley Skalmoski was next with 13 points, followed by Vanessa Lebens and Deandra Vavra, with 12 points apiece; and Grace Kennedy, 10.

Linzmeier also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, dished out five assists, blocked two shots and had two steals.

Whitewater was led by Kaitlyn Thill’s 16 points and seven assists.

UWS led the entire game, including 3-0 on a 3-pointer by Blake just 25 seconds into the game.

An Abbie Reeves jumper made the score 3-2, but that would be as close at the Warhawks would get as UWS eventually took a 41-25 lead at the half.

Superior’s largest lead was 23 points (71-48) when Blake made a layup with 6:27 remaining.

Whitewater’s record falls to 22-5 and the loss was the first of the season for the Warhawks against an WIAC opponent. They won the WIAC regular-season championship with a 16-0 record.

UWS lost to Oshkosh twice this season, 56-52 on Dec. 7 in Superior and 56-42 on Feb. 22 at Oshkosh.

SPARTAN SPIN: UWS is now 4-6 all-time in WIAC tournament games. … UWW had knocked UWS out of the past two tournaments, including in last year’s semifinals with an 80-71 win. The Warhawks also defeated the Yellowjackets 92-55  in the 2012 quarterfinals. … Prior to 2012, UWS last played in the WIAC tournament in 2004, losing to Oshkosh 84-66. … In 2000 UWS defeated UW-La Crosse 90-66 in a play-in game in Superior then lost to UW-Eau Claire 92-23 in the quarterfinals. … UWS lost the 1999 play-in game to UWLC 59-57.
