This year marks the 46th season of summer programs at the Shell Lake Arts Center, and it starts this weekend with the Adult Big Band Workshop, featuring musicians from across the Midwest working with jazz extraordinaires Greg Keel, Phil Ostrander and Chris White.
Participants perform classic big band charts under the direction of these nationally recognized teaching artists. In addition to performing these classic tunes, participants also study jazz history, improvisation, theory and listening. The final concert for the Big Band workshop is at noon Sunday at the Lakefront Pavilion. Bring a picnic and celebrate Father's Day with a free outdoor concert.
The faculty of the workshop perform a free concert featuring favorites from the Big Band era at 7 p.m. tonight in the garden of the Potter's Shed. Beverages and hors d'ouevres are available for purchase in The Potter's Shed.
More free faculty jazz concerts take place at 7 p.m. Sunday and Wednesday in the air conditioned Darrell Aderman Auditorium. The first Lakefront Pavilion concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday as part of the Monday Night Movie festivities.
Shell Lake State Bank and Indianhead Credit Union sponsor the concert Monday.
