'Jackets sweep hoop battle with Saints
The University of Wisconsin-Superior women's basketball team defeated the College of St. Scholastica Saints 74-63 Monday night at the Reif Center in Duluth.
The women's game was the first game of a doubleheader between UWS and CSS. The Yellowjacket men completed the sweep with an 86-72 win in the nightcap.
Sally Linzmeier led the Yellowjackets with 23 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Going into Monday's game, Linzmeier was averaging 16 points and 7.3 rebounds a game.
Also for UWS, Grace Kennedy added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Britnee Blake and Vanessa Lebens chipped in with nine points apiece.
The Yellowjackets made just 2-of-11 from 3-point range, but were 20-of-25 from the free-throw line. They also grabbed 48 rebounds and turned the ball over just 18 times.
UWS got scoring from 10 of the 15 players that saw action. The 'Jackets also got seven points from Hadley Skalmoski, four points apiece from Brynn Liljander, Autumn Ackerman and Allie Nelson; and two points each from Dana Karlstad and Sarah Lekson
Kayla Swanson led the Saints (0-4) with 16 points. Caitlin McKernon added 11 points and five rebounds, and Kelsey Sorenson had 10 points and three assists.
St. Scholastica was 6-of-17 on 3-pointers and 15-of-18 from the charity line, but 24 turnovers were key in the Saints falling to 0-4 on the season.
Sammy Doucette's 3-pointer got the Saints within 11-10 early on, but UWS gradually pulled way, eventually opening up a 28-13 lead.
St. Scholastica rebounded a bit and got within 34-23 at halftime.
Helping Superior build its lead was a 6-0 advantage on fast-break points.
The Saints cut the Yellowjackets' lead to seven points twice early in the second half, but a Linzmeier layup after a long pass from Blake, a Blake 3-pointer and a Linzmeier 3-point play gave UWS a 60-44 lead with 7:30 remaining.
Superior matched its largest lead of the game, 18 points, several times down the stretch, including 70-52 on a Nelson basket with less than four minutes left.
The Yellowjackets (2-2) open WIAC play against UW-Stout at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4 in Menomonie.
'JACKET JOTTINGS: CSS leads the all-time series with UWS 24-21. UWS also won last year's game 85-75.
The Yellowjackets and Saints (0-3) were both seeking their first win of the season. UWS was leading 37-27 at halftime before winning by 14 points.
UWS fell to 0-2 on the season with a 80-73 loss to Augsburg College Friday night in Minneapolis.
The Yellowjackets started the first half strong and took a 21-11 lead at 11:44 when Tilyn Hollis knocked down a 3-pointer. Augsburg chipped away to tie the game at 29-29 at 4:52, and UWS trailed 37-35 at halftime.
In the second half, Augsburg maintained a narrow lead until Brian Lindblom's jumper put UWS up 67-66 with 4:18 to play. Augsburg reclaimed the lead 30 second later and outscored the Yellowjackets 6-2 in the final minute to win.
Jarrod Peterson led UWS with 32 points. Aaron Corry added 14 points and eight rebounds, Hollis finished with 10 points and Bronson Byrne had nine points and three blocks.
Zach Schradle also added eight rebounds, including four on the offensive boards.
The Yellowjackets will host the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic this weekend. St. Scholastica will play Concordia-Minn. at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by UWS and Finlandia at 7:30 p.m. The third-place game is at 3 p.m. Sunday, followed by the title game at 5 p.m.
