Heartfelt thanks for generosity
The fourth annual Bill Downs Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament was held June 27 at the Nemadji Golf Course. This is the third year that Bill Downs III has organized the event and named the Humane Society of Douglas County Inc. as the benefactor of all proceeds in memory of his late father, a life-long HSDC member, who passed away in 2009. The support of helping animals is as important to Bill III as it was to his dad, and his love of animals has been passed down to him. This year brought in 12 teams on another rainy, cool day, which seems to be the norm for this fundraiser. In spite of the weather, golfers enjoyed a four-person scramble, delicious meal thanks to Scott, door prizes, team awards and fellowship to support this worthy cause for our furry friends. This tournament was largely successful thanks to the overwhelming giving spirit of our team and hole sponsors, along with businesses and individuals who solicited and donated door prizes. They include Mark Carlson, Steve Flagstad and staff at Nemadji; Judy at Downs-LeSage Funeral Home; Jill Harnstrom, HSDC volunteers Jean, Linda and Pam; and especially all of the golfers who made this possible. Thanks also to Don Leighton for the timely fundraiser article in the sports section on June 24. Your presence was missed this year. Almost $6,000 was raised, which will provide food, shelter and medical care for the homeless animals at the shelter. A granite bench in memory of William “Bill” Downs Jr. is located at the entrance to the Nemadji Club House with this inscription: “The value of a man resides in what he gives.” The Humane Society of Douglas County Inc. is grateful for this philanthropic gesture and offers heartfelt thanks for the generosity and continued support of their mission in the community.
