Thursday was billed as “Pink the Rink” night with the Spartans wearing pink socks and pink ribbons and both teams using pink hockey tape. The event was a Senior Project for SHS students Julia Frye, Riley McGrath and Samantha Roske.

The Hawks jumped on the Spartans with four first-period goals, including the first of two goals on the night from Kyle Amundson. Also scoring were Brendan Baker, Nate Pionk and Sam Gibson.

The Spartans came out strong in the second period and cut the lead in half as Aaron Miller scored unassisted at 3:20, and Daniel Burger scored with assists from Mitch Anderson and Jesse Polson at 7:18.

The play on Miller’s team-leading 17th goal of the season started when Spartan goaltender Paxton Paine got a glove on a shot by a Hermantown player and the puck hit the cross bar.

Miller eventually picked up the loose puck, skated in from the right boards and slipped a back-hander past Hermantown goaltender Jace Thomas.

Burger’s third goal of the year came on a high wrist shot from the right circle after passes from Mitch Anderson and Jesse Polson.

Any momentum gained from Burger’s goal disappeared 41 seconds later when Hermantown’s Wyatt Aamodt scored with assists from Ryan Kero and Scott Wasbotten.

The Hawks tacked on three more goals in the third period, including Amundson’s second goal of the game, and goals from Eric Gotz and Kori Ochs.

Paine finished with 25 saves for Superior and Thomas had 18 for Hermantown.

Superior (6-9 overall, 1-2 Lake Superior Conference) hosts Duluth Denfeld at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
