Greyhounds defeat SHS baseball team
The weather has not cooperated with the Superior High School baseball team this season, but the Spartans were able to get in a game against the Duluth East Greyhounds Wednesday in Duluth.
Duluth East had a strong day at the plate and defeated Superior 12-1 in five innings.
“Just one of those games you tip your cap to the opponent,” said Don Dembroski, SHS head coach. “East really hit the ball tonight, and we didn’t.”
The Spartans fall to 0-3 with the loss.
Duluth’s Trever Laakso earned the pitching win with a three-hitter over five innings. He struck out six and walked five, allowing one earned run.
Logan Griffith, Morgen Moen and Austin Sears shared pitching duties for Superior. They combined to allow eight earned runs on 13 hits and two walks while striking out four.
At the plate, Nathanial Benson led the way for Duluth East by going 4-for-4 with a triple and a double. Nate Schuman went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, and Chris Olson went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Justin Reinkall went 1-for-2 for Superior and scored the team’s lone run. Also collecting hits for the Spartans were Taavi Mattson and Peyton Flanders.
SPARTAN SPIN: The Superior junior varsity team defeated Duluth East 10-6 Wednesday in a game shortened by darkness. Nate Kunkel got the pitching win for the Spartans in four innings of work. He allowed six runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one. Tyler Lehikoinen had two hits for the Spartans, and Tate Schlichting had a double and two RBIs. Matt Strum and Alex Kaske also had hits for the Spartans.
