Boys Hockey

Tyler Nystrom’s goal in overtime gave the Superior High School boys hockey team a 3-2 win at Wausau West Friday night in the opening round of the Green Bay Notre Dame Tournament.

Aaron Miller and Daniel Mikel also scored for the Spartans, who play Stevens Point at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Marquette at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Paxton Paine picked up the win in goal for Superior with around 24 saves.

Girls Hockey

The SHS girls hockey team got four goals from Emma Peterson and two more from Jordyn Thompson in a 7-2 win over the Eau Claire-Altoona Stars Friday night at the Superior Ice Arena.

Devyn Moss also scored for the Spartans and Justine Stenberg picked up the win in goal with 23 saves.

Women’s Hockey

Shanley Peters recorded her third straight shutout and five different players scored as the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team defeated UW-Eau Claire 5-0 Friday night at Wessman Arena.

Peters finished with 18 saves for the Yellowjackets and Paige Turner stopped 41 shots for the Blugolds.

Haley Olmstead, Kiara DeKezel, Kerry Mayhew, Dani Schultz and Mara Techendorf scored goals for UWS.

The Yellowjackets and Blugolds play again at 2 p.m. Saturday in Eau Claire.

Men’s Hockey

Former Superior Spartan Pat Dalbec scored a goal and assisted on two others as the UWS men’s hockey team skated to a 4-4 overtime tie at UW-Stevens Point Friday night.

Michael Rey, Jeff Forsythe and Joey Massingham also scored for the Yellowjackets and Dayne Belfour finished with 32 saves in goal.

Spencer Viele had 25 saves for the Pointers, who got goals from Scott Henegar, Kyle Brodie, Kyle Sharkey and Kevin Gibson.

Game two of the series is at 7 p.m. Saturday in Stevens Point.

Boys Basketball

The Superior High School boys basketball team lost to Tartan, Minn., 73-53, Friday night in the SHS gym.

Matt O’Shaughnessy led the Spartans with 18 points.

Tartan, which led 36-25 at the half, got 17 points from Keenan Bellaphant, 15 from Thomas Hanson and 11 from Jordan Horn.
