Fred D. (Dale) Johnson
Fred was a 1948 graduate of Central High School in Superior, Wis. He was always interested in aviation and chose to make it his career. He was hooked after his first flying lesson as a teenager in Wis. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served 4 yrs. in Okinawa. Upon his return, he was stationed at Sublette Air Base in Kirksville, Mo. where he met Carolyn three days after arriving in town. They married in Feb. 1955. After moving to California in 1956, he continued taking flying lessons in Long Beach and Orange County, Calif. he utilized his training in Radar and flying and secured employment with F.A.A. as an Air Traffic Controller in 1958 and retired in 1980 from Orange County Air Port, Calif. He attended Orange Coast College for three years while working at the Control Tower. His secondary career as a Facilities Mgr. at a Company in Orange, Calif. utilized his many craftsman skills. He made lifelong friends at both places.
He lived with his wife and children in Southern Calif. from 1956 until 2009 when he made Lees Summit his new home. His many interests included gardening, golfing, watching baseball and building model aircraft from World War II as well as painting in oil and watercolor.
He was preceded in death by his father William A. Johnson and mother Edith A. Johnson of South Range, and his brother Lloyd W. Johnson of Anaheim, Calif.
He is survived by his wife of 59 1/2 yrs., Carolyn (Kay) Johnson, his daughter Jeri Lyn and son Bradley and daughter-in-law Suzanne Johnson, all of Lee's Summit. He is also survived by his brother George and Sally Johnson of South Range, one grandchild Michael Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif., his nephews Douglas and Mary Johnson and William and Kim Johnson of Peoria, Ariz.
Funeral services were held Friday July 18 at Langsford Funeral Home. Burial was at Lees Summit Cemetery.
