Prosecutors will not file charges in overdose death of musician Prince

Ely G. Bonet

Ely G. Bonet entered eternal life on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's.

Ely was born in Santiago, Cuba on March 1, 1936. He married the love of his life in August 1959. In 1960 they had their only child, Beatriz. He lived in Superior for many years where he made many lasting friends and worked for Arco Coffee, a job that he loved. They moved to Madison, Wis. in 1978 and he worked as an auditor for the State of Wisconsin Public Service Commission until his retirement. Ely and Lourdes chose the "Land of Enchantment" for their twilight years and retired to Las Cruces, N.M. in 2001.

Ely made friends wherever he went, that's the kind of funny, caring man Ely was.

He is survived by his beloved wife Lourdes of Las Cruces, N.M., his daughter Beatriz Bonet of Madison, Wis., his granddaughter Jessica Arendas (Stephen) of Chicago, Ill., adopted son Lazaro Lavin of Madison, Wis., his granddaughters Maritza and Malaya, as well as numerous family and friends all over the country and in Cuba.

Today, as we waxed poetic on your life, a dear friend mentioned that she learned how to love by watching you, Lourdes and Beatriz as a family over the years. Growing up surrounded by that same love as your granddaughter, you taught me what unabashed, true and unconditional love looked, sounded and felt like. You have done this, I suspect, for many people over the years from Cuba to Wisconsin to New Mexico.

Elys family would like to extend a special thank you to his angels, Caregivers Maricella Esparza and Jovana Esparza along with the other angels who would come over to help as needed. And to the Ambercare Hospice of Las Cruces, a special thank you to his nurse Carolina, and Dr. Sierra and her lovely staff.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Jan. 25 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1327 N. Miranda Street, Las Cruces, N.M. and inurnment at the Columbarium followed. Memorials may be made to The Alzheimer's Association or the Las Cruces Gospel Mission, 1422 S. Solano Drive, Las Cruces, NM, 88011. A memorial service celebrating his life will also be held in Wisconsin this summer.

From Ely to Lourdes, July 30, 2008: Im there inside your heart.

Right now Im in a different place, And though we seem apart, Im closer than I ever was, Im there inside your heart.

Im with you when you greet each day, And while the sun shines bright, Im there to share the sunsets tooIm with you every night.

Im with you when the times are good, To share a laugh or two, And if a tear starts to fallIll still be there for you. And when the day arrives that we no longer are apart, Ill smile and hold you close to me. Forever in my heart.

As your memory faded, your love stayed perfectly intact. As your body declined, your hands still held on tight. As you passed, your love remained apparent and engulfed everyone around you. Ely, Pa, Papi, Mono Viejo, hijo, hermano, tio, primo, friend we will miss you so much and will carry your love in our hearts forever. Thank you for making us who we are and for sharing your love, always.
