As you clean out your closets this spring, set aside the clothing and household textiles you no longer need. Then donate them to Goodwill at your local Bon-Ton stores from March 13-29 to earn valuable coupons while helping your community.

For each item donated, customers will receive a coupon for up to 25 percent off regular and sale prices. Coupons may be redeemed at any of Bon-Ton’s 270 stores and furniture galleries, which includes all Herberger’s or Younkers stores.

Donated items create jobs for people with disabilities or barriers to employment, and the revenue from donation sales funds Goodwill’s job training programs.

The Goodwill Sale has been turning donors into job creators since 1994, helping to provide employment and training to people like Steve Whiteman of Duluth.

Whiteman came to Goodwill in 1998 after struggling with alcoholism for decades, eventually sustaining an alcohol-related head injury so severe he was forced to re-learn basic motor skills. He’s now celebrating 16 years of sobriety and stability, with help from his job at Goodwill.

“Goodwill helped me stay positive by coming to work, being responsible, and learning work skills,” Whiteman said.

Donations typically decline in the Northland during the winter months, and the Goodwill Sale provides a much-needed boost during a critical time.

“Spring is the perfect time to clean out your home and donate the things you no longer need to Goodwill,” said Marge Bray, executive director of Goodwill Duluth. “Donations to Goodwill provide someone like Steve with a fresh start and an opportunity to work in his community. When you support the Goodwill Sale, you’re helping to create jobs and employment opportunities in your community.”

“The Bon-Ton family of stores has made a commitment to strengthen our communities and this program exemplifies that mission,” said Brendan Hoffman, president and chief executive officer of The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. “We are pleased to kick off our 20th year of supporting Goodwill Industries through our signature Goodwill Sale event.”

Headquartered in Duluth with 13 store locations across northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin, Goodwill provides jobs to more than 200 people each day and has been serving the Northland since 1919.

Younkers has stores at the Mariner Mall, 69 North 28 St., and Miller Hill Mall, 1600 Miller Trunk Highway, Duluth.
