County unveils bridge plan
The Douglas County Highway C Bridge over the Nemadji River is getting some much-needed attention next fall.
The project involves improvements to the roadway and bridge at the crossing of the Nemadji River about 0.4 miles east of State Highway 35. Plans include replacing the existing concrete bridge deck and railings, and stabilizing the slope under the bridge to protect it from scour.
The bridge deck was beginning to crumble and chunks of concrete were falling, said Douglas County Highway Commissioner Paul Halverson. While the county did an overlay project, it was just a temporary fix to buy time until the deck could be replaced, he said.
Stabilizing the slope, which involves using riprap and rock to shore up the banks of the Nemadji River, will prevent damage to the bridge during high water events, Halverson said.
The pavement will be replaced for about 100 feet at each end of the bridge. The project is scheduled for construction in the fall of 2014. County Road C will be closed to traffic at the bridge during construction, estimated to take up to six weeks.
A variety of exhibits and maps are available at the public information meeting, and representatives from the Douglas County Highway Department and Ayres Associates will be on hand to discuss the project and answer questions.
Funding for the $540,000 project includes 80 percent federal funds through the Surface Transportation Program administered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation with a 20 percent county match.
