Councilor talks city trash

Email

Everybody talks about the landfill, but what can be done?

It is oozing and losing about $1 million a year that has to be made up by the city. The state of Wisconsin does not allow a fee unless the same amount is deducted from real estate taxes so it is a wash.

What can we do to help?

Only put out your garbage can when it is full. This saves gas and hydraulic fluid. Garbage won’t smell if it is put in tied plastic bags. This is a city of Superior requirement. If you don’t make much garbage this becomes bi-weekly or monthly pick up.

Recycle everything possible. It is state law. That little triangle should say numbers 1-7. McDonald’s coffee cups and lids, yogurt containers and the aluminum top, glass, plastic bottles, paper of all types including junk mail, and much, much more. Rinse out everything, please!

Check out the county website for recycling information at www.douglascountywi.org.

Recycle those plastic bags at Super One or Wal-Mart. Electronics recycling will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 14 at the fairgrounds. Most items are free.

Will any of this counteract the $1 million being lost yearly at the landfill? Not totally, but every little bit helps.
