The Superior High School girls soccer team notched its second shutout in two days and with it its second straight Middle Border Conference championship.

The Spartans defeated Spooner 6-0 on Thursday and then Amery 8-0 Friday to improve to 14-1 overall and 14-0 in league play giving them 28 points. Both games were played at the SHS soccer fields.

New Richmond (12-8, 1, 12-2-1) is in second place with 25 points.

Sammy Young recorded her ninth shutout of the season for the Spartans with one save.

Malley O’Brien scored the game’s first four goals to increase her Wisconsin-leading goal-scoring total to 39 this season. Bridget Manion added two goals and Ashlyn Meys and Rachel Dixon had a goal apiece.

O’Brien, a junior who is committed to play at the University of Wisconsin, scored in the second, sixth, seventh and 28th minutes.

Despite outscoring their opponents by a nearly 8-to-1 margin, the Spartans received the No. 8 seed in the Division 1 Sectional 1 playoffs and will have to travel to No. 1 D.C. Everest for a 4:30 p.m. game on Thursday.

The winner will play the winner of the Wausau West-Hudson game on Saturday.

The Spartans wrap up the regular season by hosting Osceola at 4:30 p.m. today. Monday’s game with New Richmond was rained out.

SPARTAN SPIN: Earlier this season, Superior defeated ­Amery 8-0, New Richmond 4-2 and Osceola 4-0. … O’Brien also leads the state in total points with 89. Kristin Mathiowetz of Regis/McDonell Central is second with 82 points and Waunakee’s Emily Mouille is second in goals scored with 34.

Superior 6, Spooner 0

After sitting out the second half of Thursday’s 3-2 OT win over Hayward with an injury, O’Brien returned to action Thursday and gave Superior a 1-0 lead with a goal on a corner kick in the 15th minute.

Kennedy Grimstad also scored twice for Superior and Manion, Dixon and Megan Tunell each scored once.

Amber Welch assisted on both of Grimstad’s goals, Tina Lurndal helped out on Manion’s 14th goal of the season and Lorena Lane earned an assist on Dixon’s tally.

Young recorded her eighth shutout of the season with two saves.

Emily Beehler had 19 saves for Spooner/Shell Lake (2-12, 2-11).
