Coast Guard commences ice-breaking operations
Superior Wisconsin 1226 Ogden Ave. Ste. 1 54880

Ice is forming in the greater Duluth/Superior Harbor and Thunder Bay, Ont. regions. U.S. Coast Guard Cutter KATMAI BAY will conduct ice-breaking operations to facilitate the movement of commercial shipping throughout the Twin Ports and Thunder Bay. U.S. Coast Guard Cutter ALDER will relieve the KATMAI BAY at a later date. This activity will extend to the end of the shipping season, which normally concludes Jan. 16.

All snowmobile, all-terrain vehicle (ATV) operators, and other recreational users of the ice should avoid shipping channels, plan their activity carefully, and use caution near the ice. Ice fishermen, especially, should use caution when placing their ice shacks in proximity to the shipping channels.
