The win was the first ever for the Cardinals over the Spartans, who went into the game leading the all-time series 10-0.

The Spartans, who were already without Daniel Burger (thumb) and Aaron Wakefield-Zubiate (knee), played Thursday without leading scorer Aaron Miller, who injured a thumb in Tuesday’s win over Rice Lake.

The Spartans got two goals apiece from Beau Reder and Daniel Mikel and Peyton Flanders and Paxton Paine combined to make 20 saves. Flanders had nine saves in the first period and Paine had 11 in the final two periods.

Chippewa Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Reder scored his first goal of the game. The Cardinals added another goal for a 4-1 lead after one period.

The Spartans got within 5-3 after two periods on goals by Reder and Mikel, but the Cardinals made it a 7-3 game early in the third period, with the second goal coming on a 5-on-3 power play.

Mikel’s second goal made the score 7-4 with 9:30 remaining and the Cardinals finished the scoring with a breakaway goal.

Jordan Steimetz led Chippewa Falls with two goals and an assist. Danny Toycen added a pair of goals and Chase Stoffel, Austin Jordan, Tyler Anderson and Bailey Decker had a goal each.

Sean Dubiel had 20 saves in goal for the Cardinals.

The Spartans host Menomonie at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The game will be carried live at ifan.tv and on the radio at WNXR 107.3 FM.
