Blues sweep Proctor, play at Duluth East today

The Superior Blues swept Proctor on Tuesday afternoon, winning 2-1 and 17-2 in five innings. Action took place at Morrie Arnovich Field.

In the opener, the Blues scored both of their runs in the first inning. Caden Tchop stole second and third base before he scored and Justin Reinkall came in on an error during a run-down play between home and third base.

Keith Montgomery kept Proctor scoreless over 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the Blues.

Proctor’s run came in the seventh inning on John Aase’s RBI single.

Superior had two hits, one each by Matt Strum and Hunter Hockenbrock.

Aase was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Proctor. Brandt Forstrom took the loss, allowing five walks with eight strikeouts.

In game two, the Blues erased a 2-1 deficit with 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning and then tacked on five more in the fourth to complete the sweep.

Included in the 11-run third inning were Justin Reinkall’s RBI double, Hockenbrock’s two-run single, Montgomery’s two-run double, a bases-loaded walk by Tate Schlichting, two hit batters an error and two fielder’s choices.

Hockenbrock scored on an error and Carter Kolstad scored on Austin Slaviero-Sears’ single in the fifth.

The Blues had 12 hits, led by Hockenbrock, who was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Slaviero-Sears and Reinkall both had two hits and two RBIs; Strum, Schlichting and Montgomery all had a hit and two RBIs; Brett Austin knocked in a run; and Kolstad and CJ Fortune added a hit apiece.

Hockenbrock pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts in relief of Schlichting, who allowed two runs on six hits in three innings. He also walked three and struck out two.

The Blues play a doubleheader at Duluth East “A” today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. They host Duluth East “B” for two games at 5 p.m. Friday and then will play in the Hibbing Tournament this weekend. On Saturday, the Blues play Greenway at 12:30 p.m. and Grand Rapids at 4 p.m. Sunday’s games are Cold Spring at 10 a.m. and Hibbing at 3 p.m.
