Blues improve to 4-2: Superior team sweeps Esko, splits in Grand Rapids

The Superior Blues (16U) baseball team went 1-1 in the Grand Rapids Tournament on Saturday, losing 8-3 to Bemidji and defeating Grand Rapids Orange 8-7. Play was rained out on Sunday.

The Blues (4-2) host Proctor for two games at noon today and play a doubleheader at Duluth East at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

CJ Fortune led the Blues on offense against Bemidji with two RBIs and a sixth-inning double.

Justin Reinkall suffered the loss for Blues. In five innings he walked three, struck out five and allowed four runs.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, the Blues got on the board on Carter Kolstad’s RBI single.

Bemidji added single runs in the third and fifth innings and two runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Superior’s final two runs came in on Fortune’s double in the sixth.

Josh Tomczak’s RBI single in the eighth inning provide the winning run for the Blues against Grand Rapids Orange.

Michael LaJoie singled to get things started in the eighth inning. After moving to second on a single by Kolstad, LaJoie scored on Tomczak’s hit.

Brett Austin reached base twice for the Blues, including when he singled in the fifth inning.

The Blues jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Two runs came in when Austin Slaviero-Sears singled to score Tate Schlichting and Tomczak.

The Blues then added more runs when Austin scored on a groundout by Justin Reinkall.

Grand Rapids Orange posted one run in each the third, fourth and sixth innings.

Blues base runners came all the way around to score in each of the fourth, fifth and eighth innings. In the fourth, the Blues scored on a sacrifice fly by Kolstad, plating Matt Strum.

Blues sweep Esko

The Blues swept a doubleheader from Esko Thursday night at Morrie Arnovich Field with wins of 12-1 and 8-4.

The Blues scored all of their runs in the opener during the first three innings.

Caden Tchop scored the first run when he stole home in the first inning. Hunter Hockenbrock and Reinkall followed with two-run singles.

Reinkall led the Blues at the plate by going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Hockenbrock and Slaviero-Sears both added a hit and two RBIs. Strum, Keith Montgomery and Schlichting added singles.

Hockenbrock picked up the win on the mound, tossing a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks in four innings. Slaviero-Sears pitched the final inning, allowing a run on two hits and a walk.

The Blues struck early again in game two with three runs in the bottom of the first inning when Reinkall hit an RBI double and a run came in on Strum’s groundout.

Esko got one run back in the second inning and threatened to score more before Strum got out of the jam by inducing an inning-ending groundout.

Esko added another run in the third inning before Superior opened the game up with a three-run fourth inning.

Austin got things going when his single scored Alex Kaske and  Fortune. Austin then scored on Slaviero-Sears’ single.

Esko got within 6-4 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Blues added two insurance runs in the sixth inning on Reinkall’s two-run double.

Superior had eight hits, two apiece by Tchop and Reinkall and one each by Slaviero-Sears, Tomczak, Kaske and Austin.

Reinkall knocked in three runs and Slaviero-Sears, Strum and Austin had an RBI apiece.

Strum picked up the win, allowing four runs over five innings. He struck out one, walked one and surrendered eight hits.
