The Superior school district expects a crowd for tonight’s grand opening of the new National Bank of Commerce Spartan Sports Complex.

Activities director Ray Kosey advises fans to arrive early and carpool if they can.

Those who show up late should be prepared to stand.

Tickets for the grand opening went on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday. In the first four hours, the school district sold 657 tickets.

“Our stadium holds 3,000 in the bleachers, so we anticipate standing room only,” Kosey said.

Advance tickets for the event will continue to be sold until noon today.

Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students.

Children in pre-kindergarten or younger receive free admittance.

The grand opening of the NBC Spartan Sports complex is slated to kick off at 1 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Superior High School boys soccer team will follow with a game against Osceola at 2 p.m., and the Spartan football team will host Merrill at 7 p.m.

Parking

Spaces will be hard to find if the crowd turnout estimates prove correct. Kosey said he would strongly encourage carpooling when possible.

Wearing comfortable walking shoes may also be a good idea.

For the grand opening, all SHS lots and the Wessman Arena lot will be open. Overflow parking will be available at Northern Lights Elementary School, but a shuttle will not be provided.

People are asked not to park along Spartan Drive or in any of the no-parking areas near the high school.

Concessions

A full menu of crowd favorites will be on sale at the new concessions stand, which will be manned by the school district’s food service employees.

Food service director Jeanne Hopkins has worked with her staff for months to set up the new space, and she said they’re all excited for the grand opening.

“Our staff is just thrilled to be working there. It’s so nice that it’s right next to the school,” Hopkins said.

For tonight’s game, the food service department will have four gas grills set up with hot dogs, bratwurst and cheddarwurst. They’ll also offer hamburgers, cheeseburgers and boneless chicken wings.

An Italian chicken sandwich is the specialty item for the night, and those interested in healthier fare can try a turkey, wild rice burger.

Hopkins said the concessions stand will also sell traditional items like chips, candy, popcorn and soft drinks.

“And we’re hoping to have root beer floats for the opener,” she said.

In the stands, vendors will walk the aisles with some of the more popular items.

“It won’t be the full menu, but we’ll have the items we think people will want,” Hopkins said. Hot dogs, popcorn and candy are on the list.

The concessions stand held a soft opening on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Hopkins said the menu drew positive reviews. One item in particular went very quickly.

“The turkey, wild rice burgers were a hit,” Hopkins said.

The food service department has since stocked up on the hot menu item. Hopkins said an additional food delivery was made Thursday, and she believes the concessions stand will be able to keep up with demand tonight.
