Beware of sweet nectar of destruction
Superior Wisconsin 1226 Ogden Ave. Ste. 1 54880

The Venus flytrap is a flower that reverses the common food chain. It is a plant that eats flesh. It grows closable pads that excrete a sugary nectar to bait its victims. When an unsuspecting insect lands to enjoy a snack, the pads snap shut, capturing its prey, beginning the digestive process.

This unusual behavior presents a challenge to the longevity of the plant. Like most vegetation, the flytrap must undergo pollination. But if it eats all the insects that visit it, fertilization would be impossible. To address this, the plant produces a separate bundle of flowers that grow on a stem above its deadly pads. Pollenating insects can visit these blossoms without the immediate fear of being devoured, unless they fall prey to the deeper allures of the plant.

Where this provision testifies to the intricacies of God’s creation, it also illustrates a more ominous reality of the dangers in this world. Some things that attract us, do so for their own benefit, and can destroy us in the end.

Those items that tend to addict us fall into this category. Initially, they are presented as a fun, popular, even beneficial thing to do. We enjoy buzzing the surface, (so to speak) enjoying the blooms and nectar provided for our amusement. However, in time we are attracted deeper into the experience to our own unexpected demise.

Beware! Many of life’s devastations are presented as enhancing, fulfilling events, only to ensnare and devour all who come near.

Pastor Mark Holmes is an ordained minister in the Wesleyan Church and has served the Darrow Road Wesleyan Church since 1997.
