SHS mock trial teams earn first, third at regional competition
Superior High School Mock Trial teams placed in the top three at the regional tournament at the Eau Claire County Courthouse on Feb. 13. This season, the high school two teams — varsity and junior varsity. At the tournament, the varsity team took first place and were undefeated. The junior varsity team, comprised of mostly underclassmen, took third place at the tournament. Lora Randa, a freshmen on the junior varsity team, received the best litigator award for the region.
“Lora has been working so hard and progressing so much that she definitely deserved the prestigious recognition,” said coach and SHS teacher Danielle Gondik.
Attorney Coach Mark Fruehauf said that he was “pleased as punch” at the varsity team’s legal arguments on objections during the regional tournament. The varsity team will be headed to the state tournament in Madison on March 12. There will be a public performance at 6 p.m. on March 10 in Judge Kelly Thimm’s courtroom at the Douglas County Courthouse. The performance is open to anyone in the community that wishes to support the team.
The high school will have a state send-off for the team on at 7:50 a.m. March 11 in the gym. The send-off is also open to the public.
The varsity team includes Olivia Anderson-Petroske, Mikayla Guski, Theo Britton, Autumn Bass, Naomi Lear, Robert McGrady, Kyle Sullivan, Elizabeth McClure, Isabelle Hedberg and Ashton Linnum.
The junior varsity team members are Lora Randa, Rae Dunbar, Heidi Gondik, Caleb Sexton, Autumn Wolter, Luke Fornengo, Sarah Harkabus, Jaxon Hoffman, Olivia Pennington, Truc Nguyen, Taylor Hernandez and Malita Villamayor.
The teams are coached by Gondik, Fruehauf, Thimm, Mark Johnson, Anders Hultstrom, attorney Jaramy Hansen and Karlie Mattson.
