Deer advisory council welcomes public comment

The public has one more opportunity to comment on the deer population objectives and deer management unit boundary recommendations for Douglas County.

The Douglas County Deer Advisory Council holds its final 2017 meeting 5-8 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Superior Public Library. The Council takes additional public comments and review the public opinion survey results prior to developing its final recommendations.

The council's preliminary recommendations were to increase the local deer population and change the current boundary. Their recommendation would combine old deer management units 1 and 2, 8 and 9, and let the former unit 4 stand alone. The council will consider scientific deer metrics, and stakeholder and public opinion when developing final recommendations.

The recommendations will be presented to the Natural Resources Board in December.

Approved population objectives and unit boundaries will go into effect for the 2018-2020 deer seasons.

Council reconvene in March to discuss antlerless quotas, tags and season recommendations for the 2018 deer seasons.
