Minister focuses on faith forming congregations

Pilgrim Congregational Church explores the theme, "being a faith forming congregation" Sunday. Wade Zick, Minnesota Conference Associate Minister for Faith Formation, speaks at the 10 a.m. worship service and facilitates a discussion in the adult education hour following. On Saturday, Zick leads a workshop for parents, grandparents and others raising children. The Saturday workshop, runs 9:30 a.m. to noon and focuses on forming faith traditions within the context of family life.

Just as in many other areas of church life, traditional programs of Christian education are rapidly changing.

Vital congregations are recognizing the value of congregations as intergenerational communities where children learn the meaning of faith by participating in worship, reflection and service.

Zick has been studying the life of congregations and has identified five important characteristics of effective Faith Forming Congregations:

• Children and youth participate in worship together with adults.

• Parents engage in faith practices at home.

• Ministry opportunities are multi-generational and intergenerational.

• Children, youth and adults engage in service and reflect on the meaning of that service.

• Congregational leaders develop leadership skills.

The Sunday morning worship and adult discussion are free and open to the public. Wade's observations and findings are applicable to a variety of faith traditions. The Saturday worship for families is also open, but registration is be helpful. Call 218-724-8503 to register or for more details.
