Annual run benefits Douglas County, UWS veterans
The University of Wisconsin-Superior Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center and Douglas County Veteran Services Office hosts the fourth annual Running for Our Heroes 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 30.
"It's been great to see this event grow over the past couple years," said Monte Stewart, the VNSC student services coordinator. "I think we've made some improvements that really enhance the experience for participants. We get new people every year, and I've heard their captivating stories. Many people commemorate their heroes by wearing personalized T-shirts at the race. It's very touching to see how an event like this can really bring together the campus and the community."
Registration, as well as the start and finish line, are at the Marcovich Wellness Center, 1810 Catlin Ave., Children 12 and younger participate in a free quarter-mile race at 8:45 a.m.
Early registration is $25 until Sept. 23, and goes to $30 Sept. 24 until race day.
The registration fee for UWS students and military veterans is $15. The cost for pre-kindergarten to 12th grade students is $20 per person. Those registered by Sept. 23 receive a T-shirt and gift bag. Late registration includes a T-shirt and gift bag while supplies last. Register online at uwsuper.edu/heroes5k and 7-8:30 a.m. the day of the race.
Prizes and awards will be presented to the top three male and female overall finishers and the top three males and females in several different age categories.
The course takes you through the campus and heart of UWS, with music before and during the race, Stewart said.
"I love the fact that we conduct a formal national anthem before the race, too," Stewart said. "We also take a moment of silence to recognize the heroes in our lives who may not be here today. It's a powerful event."
Proceeds from the run/walk benefit the Douglas County Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund and the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center.
