Updated: Many made building restoration possible
Empire Block, LLC recently completed restoration of the Empire Block, the former Lurye Furniture Building, on Tower Avenue in Superior.
Meyer Group Architecture. P.C. of Duluth and Superior served as architect of record on the project, along with Hess Roise & Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota as historic preservation consultants.
The general contractor was Lakehead Constructors of Superior and the mechanical contractor was A.G. O'Brien of Duluth. Benson Electric served as the project's electrical contractor. Bachand Group of Superior, Wisconsin serves as leasing and property managers.
The redeveloped building is a mixed-use project, with fifteen single family, market-rate housing units and leased commercial retail space bordering historic Tower Avenue and 12th Street North. The preservation project represents a complete facade restoration, along with preservation of most of the interior and common area spaces and details. The building represents one of the oldest standing mixed-use buildings in the Superior and Duluth community with a long history as an anchor of retail in downtown Superior.
