Several join Essentia Health medical staff

Nurse Practitioner Angela Joneson joined the Family Medicine Department at the Essentia Health-St. Mary's Superior Clinic. She earned a doctorate in nursing from the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., and is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Nurse Practitioner Terri Heinbaugh joined the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at the Essentia Health-Duluth Clinic. She earned a master's degree in nursing from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa., and is certified by the National Certification Corp.

Nurse Practitioner Claire Kap joined the Urology Department at the Essentia Health-Duluth Clinic. She earned a master's degree in nursing from Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wis., and is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Dr. Mark Scott, a trauma surgeon, joined Essentia Health-Duluth Clinic. He earned a medical degree from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, R.I. He completed a residency in general surgery at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, and a fellowship in surgical critical care at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Anne Normand, an orthopedic oncology surgeon, joined Essentia Health-Duluth Clinic. She worked for Essentia Health from 2006-2014, and is returning to practice after completing additional fellowship training. Dr. Normand earned a medical degree from Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts, and a fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at the University of Texas in Houston and a fellowship in Orthopedic Spine Surgery at Twin Cities Spine in Minneapolis. She is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Catherine Benziger, a cardiologist, joined the Essentia Health-St. Mary's Heart and Vascular Center in Duluth. She earned a medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis and completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. Dr. Benziger is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. John Degelau, hospitalist, joined Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He earned a medical degree at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in Minneapolis, where he also completed residencies in internal medicine, and hospice and palliative care, and a fellowship in geriatrics. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Brent Ekstrom, hospitalist, joined Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He earned a medical degree from Midwestern University in Downer's Grove, Ill., and completed a residency in internal medicine at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. He's certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
